A Fun Experiment

A few weeks ago I was taken by a dear friend to The Sewing Basket at Newington a charity shop that’s chock full of all things craft related, fabric, trims , sewing ,knitting and embroidery , crochet as well , it a treasure trove for those of us that love to create using these things . All goods have been donated so are really well priced. I purchased fabric lots of it for all sorts of makes . One was a collection of fabric strips cut with pinking shears.

This is the fabric I love the colour!!

First I cut one strip in half for the Centre front and back I folded over the front piece to give a wide edge . Then I stitched a strip to each side lining up the bottom edge. But left a split on each side of the centre front hem edge for ease of movement. Then I attached the centre back panel with the finished back edge as well lining up the hem to each of the strips. Trying this over myself I realised I needed to bring in the centre front and back with a pleat. Next I decided I wanted wing style sleeves easy to wear so needed a side panel . I cut another strip into 3 even pieces and used 2 of these for my side panels. I attached them to the side of the front and back pieces after first finishing the under arm edge and threading elastic through to keep them snug to the body . Then next step was elastic along the shoulder edge.

I used satin bias tape for the casing .

I overlocked all inside edges and then decided to add a band to the bottom edge as I had a few more strips left . I ripped them in half and folded them over worked out placement.

This is a really comfortable top I look forward to wearing it.

Happy Sewing

Your top is lovely. It was a brilliant idea to use up the fabric strips in that way.

Sounds like you had a blast at The Sewing Basket.
I cannot sew other than very minor repairs and buttons 🙂
I can understand your joy and how much fun you would’ve had going through all the fabrics. My version of that would be a bonsai nursery.

We were in Sydney over the weekend and went to a Japanese Bonsai Master’s home to view her private collection. She owns Bonsai Art Nursery in Belrose. We went with my Wagga Bonsai Club, it was a huge honour to be invited to her home. A wonderful experience.
