Fun Skirt Style

I am feeling pretty good about my sewing at the moment. Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together.

floral cottonI have had this lovely printed cotton for a long time it was a part of my fabric stash that had been waiting for the right garment.I have just finished a fun colourful skirt that was so easy and fun . I used a pattern I have had for quite a while Vogue 2092. This is a wonderful pattern the skirt has no waistband .Oh Yeah !I am a big fan of  the lack of waistband on a skirt .It is so comfortable it to sits on your hips, and it has a nice straight style.

pattern V2092I had not used this pattern before so this is my wearable muslin. I lined it in voile as a layer , as it wasn’t very heavy and a separate lining in white polyester for comfort.

I drafted the pattern onto cotton fabric to fit and do adjustments before cutting. The skirt has 2 sets of darts in the front and the back.

skirt muslin wearableThe skirt has a back zipper and a back split. I have actually cut out another two skirts from this pattern and will talk about them when they are done.

It fits well and is a great addition to my wardrobe. It is such a lovely colour and it is so comfortable . I have decided for myself life is to short to wear uncomfortable clothing. I love style but really value garments that are not hard work to wear.

A Short Trip

EditI had a llittle break from my sewing for a few days this week when I had to drive to collect my mother after she had spend some time with famnily. Distances in Australia are a fact of life we live in a country that  is larEditEditge and getting around it takes time. My Mother was staying some 600kms away in Walgett,  so I drove up to her on Friday , and back home Saturday. The drive is a good oppportunity to see the state of the the changing landscape

The lovely mountain vistas , this is at Hartley about 1 .5 hours into the drive.

I decided to take photos on my trip just to record the  landscape this is a trip I do infrequenlty but its a trip into my past.

The change was so striking the lovely rolling hills gave way to the barren dry Walgett  region.

When I got onto the last piece of road to my destination I was horrified at the carnage I saw . Where kangaroos that had been hit by( I am assuming trucks) littered the road and then swarms of bugs sacrificed themselves on the front of my car. A big change from busy city driving .

The time spent with people who have known me forever in a place that holds so many memories is one thing that feeds my soul . Sewing and creating is another. What are the things that are important for your creative process  ?

A long trip allows for lots of thought.Reflection is often  helpful I find ,and spending time with family is wonderful, and always enriching . The trip home was uneventful my mother was also astounded at the change in the landscape. The First thing I did when I got home was take the car to the car wash to rid of bugs.

I will post my next creation soon .

Happy creating,

Sue 🙂

Versatile Fun and Transition ready

Hi today I made a decision to not rely on my family to take my photos . I know this seems a bit of a no brainer but it didn’t occur to me that my little camera would have a self timer but lo and behold it does. I had been reading another blog a few days ago and the writer had talked about how she had used the  self timer on her camera to take her great shots.

I was inspired.

Firstly I went to my husbands camera a big professional type digital as he has a tripod and I knew it would fit. All good except the battery was flat. So I decided to balance my tiny camera on his large tripod. I couldn’t attach it but it seemed to work. Here are the pictures of the set up.

My first attempt is of my starting garments for the transition from summer to autumn . I ordered for the first time a number of patterns from Vogue online. I had never done this before but the patterns I wanted are not available in our Australian stores yet and they were all on sale. I am thrilled with what I picked up. Here they are:winter patterns

The first make is a Vogue designer pattern V1410 a Lyn Mizono design.
winter patterns.jpg2   fabric dress

I purchased this poly blend cheaply from a local fabric store to make my wearable muslin.

Also the colours of this will coordinate well with my transition garments and it is really comfortable and adjustable .

This is a seemingly simple pattern only has 2 pattern pieces. But French seams are needed and although it makes up quickly it requires a  care, and attention to detail. I love it.  It is fine in the still warm weather we have but I envisage putting tights or leggings under and long sleeve tops and jackets over when the weather cools down.

dress blue edgeblue dress stitch.fixjpg I discovered when I was assembling the dress that I had not cut the hem on the back evenly ,(I have no idea what happened but as it is checked I had to match some more fabric to get what I was after. The result took a fraction longer than it should have but I think it came out just fine.

This dress is ingenious with the way you can adjust the length depending on whether you want a top or dress. There are three buttons on the inside and buttonholes at the side seam near the hem . Very clever I will be making this in a heavier weight fabric for winter I think.

I also have started on this Marcy Tilton pattern. V9081

black jkt MT.patternjpgI have made the jacket and this will go with both my wearable muslin, and the dress that I will be making for cooler weather. I have made it in a knit back fabric with embossed pattern.

I am really looking forward to making the garments I have planned for the cooler months. It is lovely to see the creations of all the talented people whose work I wake up to on the internet each day. My RTW fast really is going great and I have no plans to stop.

Next step : I really just need to carve out some time to organize the chaos that is my creative space.

Clearing UFO’s and a little fun

Hi ,

I have been attempting to work through my Unfinished pile as well as create a few new items before I start on my winter wardrobe.

One item I have been avoiding for a while was a silk top I had bought a few years back , it was originally a tunic style.

Silk top pseudo original style Seen here my attempt to show how it originally looked . It was a little too much for me I loved the fabric and color but I wanted a short top and had some leftover once I had cut it. I had avoided hemming it for a few years just couldn’t be happy with my attempts.

remake silk5 remake silk6

The hem of the top I have finally finished after I got the step by step details from a wonderful blog here and I am really happy with it.

The excess fabric and lining I used a couple of years ago to make a evening shawl type garment. My husband and I were invited to a Pink Ball and as I at that point didn’t own any pink evening wear ,I used the leftover fabric to make this.

I am really happy with this combination of garments the silk is gorgeous.

I have now one less unfinished garment so can move on to completing the next in the pile. It is very satisfying when something works. I know we all have things that don’t work or that make us remake or change but that is all part of the process of creating the things you want for yourself. The more I do, the more I learn and I am loving it.

The wonderful world of the online sewing community makes the answers to questions not hard to find , there is always someone who can assist with techniques and generously sharing knowledge, it is wonderful .

Happy creating,

Sue 🙂

A Little break

view mirror1

My husband and I on the weekend drove our son back to College in Melbourne as his University course started today. It is a 9 hour drive so I took a few pictures from the window (of the side mirror) in between my turns at driving and sketching and reading. I have always liked long drives and the opportunity for contemplation it gives me, I spend my driving time planning  the things I will do when time permits. Its a little like swimming I think although in the pool no one talks to you so there is a seamless quality to thoughts when I am swimming.

In between running around getting our son set up for another year in another state we went to dinner at a lovely restaurant in Carlton called ILVicolo. The food is fabulous I recommend it. Whilst there we met up again with a lovely young German designer Maria Decker you can see her website here. She is improving her English and studying business in Australia.

I managed to find the grey fabric I have been searching for while in Melbourne so I can now start my draft for the dress I hope to make. A few things to finish and hopefully I will have photos to show you in the next post.

Happy creating,

Summer Still

The weather here is still so warm its hard to think about the items needed for Autumn and Winter so I am still making up summer items to take advantage of the blue skies and balmy temperatures.

I am constantly looking at my stash trying to get some order and an accurate listing of what I have, but as well I also love to keep sewing as much as I can to bring my vision into reality.

I had been looking at my stash and the  patterns that I had and I decided to make up this lovely striped satin. I have had it for a while in my stash just waiting for the right design idea. I decided to use Burda Style pattern 6936.

I felt that this is a fairly forgiving style so I could get away without the muslin.Burda 6936

The pattern is a very straightforward make, not terribly tricky . I really liked the use of bias tape to add interest on the wrap part of the dress. It is very easy to wear and looks good on. I made the longer version this time although I didn’t follow the pattern exactly so that I could have the effect I wanted I had to make some changes and I did my usual adjustments for my lack of height.

I don’t have any pictures of myself in this yet but I just love it. The fabric was one of those purchases that (I am sure I am not alone in this) I just had to buy. It is in the colors I love, it is soft and hangs really well. I discovered because of my changes to the pattern after I had finished it that the lower inside seam could be seen when it is tied. So I  used grey bias tape and encased the seam on both sides for a more attractive result.

This was a great pattern to make , so much so my mother wants to come over and sew one with me for herself. It is really nice to wear as well, I have cut it out to make it in a few other different fabrics one sheer with a under slip dress. I will post that when it is done.

Inspiration

Hi ,

A few days ago I saw on Rhondas blog a pattern that I just found encapsulated exactly the look I wanted for a dress I need to make for one of two black tie events I have coming up. I had bought some gorgeous grey chiffon and have been searching for the perfect pattern .chiffon silver

I know that is not the way I should approach my sewing. The pattern should come first, but the fabric is the inspiration a lot of the time for me . I fall in love with the color, texture drape or some other element and I have to have it.

Then I need to find the perfect design and hope that I have enough fabric to make it. This I think adds a little more to the excitement and the challenge if you are a little short to be a  more creative . The process of developing a loved piece of fabric into a garment that will fill a void in the wardrobe or just add to what is there is so enjoyable, and incredibly satisfying.

I am at present attempting to imagine the pattern for this design and draft it myself we shall see if it works. This silver chiffon is not my only evening option but it is the one I am most excited by. I have a few other creations to share with you but my photographer cannot take pictures until later today so I will post again soon.

Happy Creating,

Sue 🙂

Self drafted Summer fun

I was inspired to again  to self draft a garment recently. My sister in law had arrived for our family Christmas gathering in a lovely dress that she declared I could easily make.I had a really good look at her dress , and I agreed with her assessment and sketched the details of the dress. Firstly I looked at the patterns I own and picked the one I felt I could modify successfully.

The lucky winner was New look 6119 that I had previously made in the short style early in 2014. The fabric I used before is in the picture. It is a really beautiful suede silk. My plan in this instance was to make a muslin.

New look pattern 6119

New look pattern 6119

Bdress patternThe first step was to draft up a pattern.

Then to find fabric for the muslin. I had bought a bolt of lining fabric from Tessutis fabrics in Surry Hills, Sydney a while ago . It is a gorgeuos chocolate color with a slightly different colour on the wrong side.

I found some great synthetic fabric that looks like  leather type armadillo print at spotlight so I brought enough to make a skirt and it also seemed the ideal neckband fabric for the dress.
leather look armadilloThe neckband made up well and complimented the dress so well that I decided this would be a wearable muslin.BdressBdress.hemclasp
I used press studs for the collar fastening.

The dress turned out well and I am very happy with it. It is another really comfortable addition to my wardrobe. I don’t know if you can tell but I used the wrong side of the fabric for the back and over panel at the front and used the right side for the under front . In reality the difference is not stark but it is interesting , I like to add quirky interest when I can.

After wearing this I realised that I need to modify the pattern . The original dress has a straighter skirt and a split at the inner side seam between the under front and back pieces for movement. My muslin has a wider skirt like the pattern I drafted it from . I will take away some of the flare in the skirt make the elastic a little more snug in the back and make it next time with an actual leather collar piece and the split. This  is a great dress to wear it moves well and feels delicious .

Summer fun

top wrap

This pattern really is easy I had cut it out a while ago and didn’t get to sew it until recently. It was a pleasure to make. The fabric I have used was a synthetic with a satin finish. I made this as a wearable muslin

Burda style top stitch

Hemming the top

Sewing the armhole opening

It is a quick and simple pattern to make up. The pattern needed only a little adjustment on the bodice to accommodate my lack of height.

Other than this it was a great fit. I like the wrap style , it has elastic on one side of the front so it is really comfortable to wear.

My photographers were not around to take my photos so there are none of me wearing it . It is really been a great addition to my summer wardrobe.

I am enjoying it so much I have cut out some of the tie dyed silk I brought in Bali last year. I am going to make the maxi version to wear while we still have the warm weather.

Weights, Drape and Shape

Today was a bit of a housekeeping day in terms of my sewing . I decided to make a set of pattern weights for me to use as so many bloggers I follow use them and I think they would make it easier to cut out . I had seen an idea on another blog here.

This gave me an idea of trying to make some myself.potential weightsI took myself to the hardware store to find washers but came home with these nuts the biggest they had . They are a good weight for what I needed.

wrappingI used ribbon that I had on hand and also some PVA glue (wood glue) to bond the ribbon to itself.
wrapt nutOnce the nuts was completely covered I glued the ribbon and held it in place to dry with a peg.

I made 15 in total so am looking forward to using them soon.

The other part of my day involved receiving some pattern making books to borrow from a friend. They are amazing.

These books contain patterns and instructions for some wonderfully clever garments .

I have added them all to my birthday wishlist. If you love a challenge and ingenious design ideas you will enjoy these. I am thrilled to have a few weeks to play with them. I will post my creations as soon as they are done.

Happy creating,

Sue 🙂
